Deadly First Hurricane of 2026 Season Leaves Trail of Destruction Across South

A devastating start to the Atlantic hurricane season has left at least four people dead as Storm Isaias tore through the southern United States. After making landfall near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 hurricane on Friday evening, the system brought violent winds and torrential rain that claimed lives in both Florida and Alabama. One victim in Florida died tragically when a falling tree crushed her home, highlighting the destructive power of the gale force winds that ripped roofs from buildings throughout the region.

The aftermath has left more than half a million residents in Florida and Alabama plunged into darkness. In response to the widespread chaos, governors in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia have declared states of emergency. To assist with recovery efforts and ensure public safety, the Florida Division of Emergency Management activated roughly 5,000 National Guard soldiers and airmen to provide critical support to impacted communities struggling with debris and flooding.

As Isaias weakens into a post-tropical cyclone, it continues its trek northward through Tennessee and Kentucky toward West Virginia. The National Hurricane Center warns that the danger is far from over, citing significant risks of landslides in the Southern Appalachians and potential flash flooding in urban areas. Additionally, dangerous surf and rip currents remain a threat along the Gulf coasts of Mexico, Cuba, and the U.S., while isolated tornadoes may still touch down across Georgia and the Carolinas.

While the South recovers from Isaias, another weather crisis is brewing in the Pacific. Hurricane Simon has rapidly intensified into a powerful Category 4 storm and is currently barreling toward Mexico’s west coast. Forecasters expect Simon to make landfall on Sunday, placing Puerto Vallarta—a major hub for international tourism—directly in the path of an extremely dangerous storm surge and high winds.
